All About [info]kashiichan [January 01, 2013]
[ mood | thoughtful ]

[info]kashiichan was born in Victoria, Australia in 1987, but was only in this country about six months before her family moved to England. During the six years they stayed there, her parents had another daughter and because she was so sick all the time, [info]kashiichan quickly learnt to do things by herself. After England the family went to Canada, where [info]kashiichan learnt to love snow. After six months they moved back to Australia, where her parents unexpectedly had another baby; this time a boy. In time her parents got divorced, but currently they are all still living together in the same house. [info]kashiichan has also done some traveling on her own, moving to Queensland at one stage for about three years. She's hoping to eventually get into Editing, taking a laptop with her on her travels, but right now she's just working on paying off her debts and saving some money.

[March 17, 2008]
[ mood | annoyed ]

For those who may not be aware, LJ appears to have stuck its head up its ass once again. I'm going to attempt to provide as much information as possible and allow readers to make up their own minds.

What has happened:

1) The basic account option has been eliminated for all accounts created after March 12th. This was done without official announcement and, when people noticed and complained, LJ proceeded to tell us that our opinions didn't matter. At one point there was a rather revealing attempt by LJ staff to insist that this was to streamline the account sign up process and that really, having to chose between basic, plus and paid was just too confusing for our poor, addled brains to handle.

The real reasons (increased revenue, of course) came out almost immediately, but there have also been rumors of ad-targeting programs that collect the gender, birthday/birth date, country, 10 most popular interests and the content of your first public post for all plus accounts and all visitors to plus accounts. There have also been rumors of LJ selling our entries. I've not been able to find much information on this, so take it with a grain of salt.

2) In addition to eliminating basic accounts, LJ also appears to have censored the popular interests page and removed interests such as bisexuality, porn, depression and sex. This is on top of continued blocking of certain interest searches.

EDIT: I'm not sure why it happened in the first place, whether it was intentional or not, but the above issue has now been fixed.

3) The community is organizing. On Friday, March 21st there will be a one day content strike. For 24 hours, add no new content to LJ. Do not post, do not comment. Hell, don't even log in. Let's remind LJ that they are nothing without their users.

The strike is midnight to midnight GMT (for Melbourne that is Friday, March 21 at 11:00 AM). Times for the rest of the world are available here.

Please spread the word about the strike, and feel free to link back to this post if you'd like.

EDIT: [info]untasted has made some icons for the cause.

Please read and repost.... [March 13, 2008]
[ mood | enraged ]

...because if you think this isn't happening in our state care facilities then you are the delusional one.

The mentally ill have no-one to listen to them. They are treated like garbage because everyone believes they are lying or making things up, but this shit does happen. In our state hospitals, psychiatric patients are second-class citizens who are told they are being irrational for simply wanting to be treated like humans. Our psych wards are full of staff who think that cruelty is the best way to "snap us out of it", and nobody believes the victim because, after all, they are just crazy right?

Please read this and help spread the message that this is for real and needs to be stopped:

http://xidiomaticlogic.livejournal.com/25948.html

An exerpt:

Please, everyone who has me on their friends-list. Read that. Take it in. Be as outraged as I am, and tell people about it. Tell people you know. Link to it from your journal. I don't want to sound egotistical, but for gods sakes something needs to be done.

Talking to Alex last night, he said "What would happen to me if I didn't have you guys to fight for my rights?" And the thing is, I don't know. He has us. We're not going to let this shit go unpunished, but how many people out there DON'T have anyone fighting for them? How many people are being treated like shit because they're Just Lunatics and no one cares about them?

Last night we passed the gaggle of under-18 patients as they were led back to their rooms just before visiting hour. I overheard one little girl turn to another and say with tears in her eyes "No one's going to visit me this time. No one ever visits me." That is chilling.

Someone needs to care about these people. If it has to be me, then so fucking be it.

Please, read this post. Be as horrified as I am, tell everyone you know. Something needs to change.

No more Basic accounts? [March 13, 2008]
[ mood | annoyed ]

Accounts created after March 12, 2008 will no longer be able to switch to the basic level, meaning that all new accounts will either be Plus or Paid accounts.

Support volunteer [info]intrepia notes that "the cutoff is that accounts with a userid below 15136000 can convert back to basic." This limit has been reached some time on March 12.

Regarding the decision to disable the creation of basic accounts, J. Shellen, VP of Product Development for LiveJournal, said in a comment:

Hi, I'm Jason Shellen, VP of Product Development for LiveJournal. I just wanted to clarify LiveJournal's stance before there is any further misunderstanding about what we are trying to do. An FAQ about the account levels was updated prior to our news post. It states:

"Basic Account is an option available to accounts which were created before March 12, 2008. No account created after this date can be turned into a Basic Account."
Existing users of Basic remain as is.

From a product perspective it was more about creating a new registration process that was easier for new users to understand. I'm sure it's been ages since many of you signed up for an account, but it was quite confusing and included a table of options that was not very inviting to new users.

For new users to the site, the options of either having an ad-supported journal or the option to pay $20 annually for more (2GB) photo storage, more userpics, and ad-controls seems like a much simpler and easy to understand work-flow. We are working hard to add even more features and are currently revisiting our ad-supported strategy to find ways to deliver more user value in a way that isn't crass.

I sincerely hope you will continue to give us a chance to respond to concerns and that we do hear what you have to say about LiveJournal.

Then later in another comment:

Thank you for bringing up these additional points. The reason we did not mention them in the news post was because it doesn't affect users other than new users and News updates are for existing users. We did actually mention:

"Other changes you may have noticed are the logged-out homepage and registration process for new users."
To reiterate, existing Basic accounts are not going away or being changed. The creation of new Basic accounts is what is being stopped. In fact, one of the reasons contributing to going with Plus instead of Basic was that most users coming through the site were opting for Plus anyway. Additionally, what constitutes a Plus and Paid account will change for the better in the near future.

Reactions from members of the Advisory Board:

[x] Brad "advised against this" but "hadn't heard anything recently about it."

[x] Esther Dyson, another member of the Advisory Board, says she wasn't consulted either.

[x] danah boyd's reaction: "Needless to say, Brad's pissed. I'm pissed. Not only because we both vehemently disagree with this change, but because they made such a change without consulting us. Or rather, we were both at a lunch a while back where they asked us what we thought and we both told them that this was the worst idea ever, although for different reasons. I had thought it had been tabled until I learned of this. After it had been posted."

Here are links to SUP's contact page and Jason Shellen's 6A and LiveJournal, Inc. addresses, in case you need them.

Thanks to [info]no_lj_ads and [info]the_lj_herald for the information.

LJ policy document [March 10, 2008]
New LJ policy document went up this morning, with a note that it's just a draft, and that they want feedback on the policies from users.

For those of you wanting to compare this to the previous policy document, it's still up here. We have updated policies in a number of areas which have generated interest from users, particularly on non-photographic images of minors, harassment, inappropriate content, and hate speech.

With that said, we'd like to invite you to read and review these policies, and comment with your thoughts. In particular, we want to hear which policies you think should change (or are missing entirely), how you would like to see them changed, and your reasoning as to why you believe it would be a better solution for LiveJournal.

We will complete this consultation process by the end of May.

Highlights from the document include:

The linked, legal definition of child pornography (in the USA) is given clearly stating that "This definition does not apply to depictions that are drawings, cartoons, sculptures, or paintings depicting minors or adults."

We are given new headings such as "Inappropriate Content", which is defined only as "A user has posted content which incites, encourages, or advocates rape, pedophilia, or the abuse of children in any way." It is not stated to be illegal, but LJ does not want to host it. It is grounds for permanent suspension.

Given that the interests were once considered to be declarations of advocation, this needs further clarification as to what exactly constitutes "advocation". Taken as is should be, this heading is not a problem. But is fiction an advocation?

Non-photographic images of minors is declared as forbidden by LJ. Letting LJ speak for itself here:

"We are not making any determination on the legality of non-photographic images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. This is simply a type of content LiveJournal has decided not to host."

"LiveJournal attempts to grant users the ability to express themselves in as many ways as possible. In the case of this content, however, LiveJournal has chosen not to host it due to its highly controversial nature."

Non-photographic images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct are not allowed on LiveJournal. They are not covered in the child pornography section of the policy, but in a separate section that says that whether or not they are legal, LJ does not want to host them. People reported for having non-photographic images of minors having sex will be required to remove the images but will not be permanently suspended.

Unanswered questions (so far):
* Who determines whether an image is of minors?
* Does nudity constitute "sexually explicit conduct"?

Unanswered questions (in the policy document, but partially addressed in comments): What about fiction?

Comment thread including the following response from LJ staff: I'd call advocacy promoting it as a good thing, or in a context more relevant to a fictional work, I might say "only to glorify". So a fictional story which involves minors having sex with adults, or involves a rape, would not be in violation of the policy unless it really went out of its way to emphasize that the portrayed acts are wonderful activities which people should be allowed to engage in. The policy as proposed is not really aimed at fictional works, though, and I don't think it would apply to fandom in any significant way. (-- [info]markf)

Adult content is still handled by the flagging system; if someone reports that you have un-flagged explicit adult content, the content or your journal can be flagged against your will by the Abuse Team as "Explicit adult content," but there won't be any other penalties.

As a reiteration, staff member [info]marta has noted that this is a document in progress: if we do not want this to be the final result, we have to act now.

Tell LJ what you think of the new document.

Updates as they come.

EDIT: This entry by [info]unkickablekitty shows "the general consensus, split up into individual comments". It's a nice overview of the whole situation.

[December 29, 2007]

[ music | t.A.T.u >> Cosmos (Outer Space) ]

I just found this entry:

http://kitsune13.livejournal.com/146021.html

It may help clear up some things about strikethrough, especially if you're involved in fandom. :)

LiveJournal - expanding collapsed comment threads [December 13, 2007]

This feature is in testing stages, which means that it's still in active development. It was created by our friends over at LJ in Moscow, and we'd love your feedback on it. Here's what you should know:

   1. It's currently only available on entry pages using the Expressive, Expressive Winter, or Mixit S2 layouts. We do plan to expand it to other layouts (and the unstyled, site schemed entry page) once the kinks have been worked out. We also plan to make it available for use in custom layouts.
   2. Paid users can use the feature on any journal using one of these layouts. Additionally, a user of any account level can use the feature on a Paid journal using one of these layouts. So it works if either the viewer or the journal being viewed is a Paid account.
   3. To expand a thread, click the link labeled "Expand" next to comments in collapsed threads. This will expand that comment and all comments under it in the thread so that you can read these comments without going to a separate page.
   4. There is a known issue that causes the "Expand" links to not work when viewing a journal with the ?style=mine argument (it will show the loading wheel forever and not expand anything). We hope to have this fixed by next week.

You can view the original entry, or leave feedback, here.

LiveJournal - sold to Russian company SUP [December 04, 2007]
[ mood | thoughtful ]
[ music | Portal >> Still Alive ]

So apparently Russians bought Live-Journal.

[info]brad approves, and has already playfully messed with a few people about the issue.

Personally I'm a little concerned, especially after reading these posts. Does anyone know anything at all about SUP, other than that they're Russian?

And just for your amusement - and because I like lulz - here are some amusing quotes from outspoken LJ users:

º "In Soviet Russia, terms of service violate you!" - [info]zzyzx
º "Oh hey, does this mean that soon, we, too, can send grenades as vgifts?" - [info]ardath_rekha
º "YOUR VAGUE ANSWERS LEAVE US UNSATISFIED. GIVE US FREE PAID MEMBERSHIP FOR SOMETHING. IT'S MY ~RIGHT~" - [info]amativus
º "So basically, if SUP gets tired of us, we're being sold to Yahoo, and our posts will be highlighted in the Times." - [info]ladylynx
º "I AM SO UPSET ABOUT [RECENT CHANGE TO PROTECT LJ's ass HERE]. I WILL TAKE MY [INSERT ANNOYING FANDOM OR GROUP HERE] TO [INSERT HALF ASSED ALTERNATIVE HERE]." - [info]leonwestbrook
º "In other words, when 6A bought LJ they really had no idea what they were getting into and were totally shocked when they realized that A) this is not MySpace and B) the userbase weren't sheep that could be easily herded by pretty words and superfluous features." - [info]candy__chan
º "So in other words, SUP is going to leave us alone, tell the morality trolls to leave us alone, stop changing our settings without mentioning it, and not sell out to some other company we've never heard of less than a year from now? GREAT! Looking forward to it." - [info]amberdiceless
º "I suspect strongly that this is what all the recent changes were about. Spiffying the place up for sale. Luckily (if we can believe lj_news, which these days I'm wary of), we seem to have been picked up by a place who realizes that we are their profit. At least, I hope they do. Then we might get some changes made to recent "functionalities" that would make them more user-friendly. (eye roll) Not to mention all the really stupid re-readings of the ToS we've been getting." - [info]tsukinofaerii
º "This is a pretty well-spun PR piece, I have to say. As a marketing director, I'm pretty impressed. However, as an LJ user, I am, to be frank (too early for irony?), disgusted. The one thing that Six Apart seems to have completely missed, from the second they purchased livejournal, is that there are PEOPLE behind the millions of usernames sitting on LJ's servers. Those people consider LJ their home... To be honest, it's not even this news, in and of itself. It's this in conjunction with the aptly named Strikethrough 2007, the vagueness of the new guidelines, the unchanged TOS, the consistent poor handling of communication by the Six Apart team to us, your clients. You'll get new LJ users. This is pretty much a given. But I don't think you'll ever be able to replace the quality of users you have now. So many of us blog nearly every day. I for one have a permanent account, and know off the top of my head 10 other close friends who do as well, and nearly everyone I know has a paid account. But you're losing us slowly, surely. Of course, given the track record over the past months, I don't think you care." - [info]littlearsonist
º "So was the huge mess that started with Strikethrough and continues through this idiotic flagging stuff done to get the property sold or was the selling at least a partial result of the utter headache LJ users created for 6A when we figured out that 6A had utter contempt for its user base?" - [info]rm
º "O, come on. You just left your Russian-speaking users without any privacy protection. And you just transferred your English-speaking users to a company with doubtful business ethics, a company based in a country with free speech record only slightly better than in Beijing or Tehran. Congratulations for your investors." - [info]arpad
º "They bought Marta and she couldn't fix their problems, because no amount of 20 years of community service expertise will justify a decision to an angry crowd of a hundred people from a particularly educated and free-thinking demographic simultaneously asking demanding questions to which there is no answer they want to hear." - [info]seika
º "Wow, LJ is starting to get passed around like a joint at a frat party. Or an STD." - [info]mittelfeld
º "Reserving judgement on all this, especially the new 'be involved with our l33t advisory board' (even though it might be a good thing) because we all saw how well that worked out for Umbridge in the Harry Potter books." - [info]peacock
º "...does this mean we'll get a staff who will take care of THE SLOWNESS/CONSTANT FREEZING of LJ instead of redesigning the effing VGift store?" - [info]inthefuturepast
º "So, 6A bought LJ to sell it to Russia. Nice work, guys." - [info]stas

EDIT THE FIRST: Various links about SUP's history etc. are being collected here, just in case anyone is interested.

EDIT THE SECOND: It's made Encyclopedia Dramatica (ED). xD;

LiveJournal - Marking journals and search filtering [November 30, 2007]
[ mood | cheerful ]

So, after reading over this entry in [info]lj_biz, I thought long and hard and decided to mark my Journal as containing Adult Concepts. This won't really affect any of you (as far as I know) as you're all over fourteen, but think about it: kids and me? Not exactly the best mix.

Something else of note is that the default search security has changed to:

Use Moderate Filtering (default setting): Filters only explicit adult content.
Check that out, people. You don't want to be missing out on search results, if you search for something, just because it might not be "PG friendly".

Also on that note, I am mildly annoyed that LJ have decided to start up the "Give More" promotion again, considering I only just bought [info]kashii_writes paid time yesterday, but oh well. You people are of course more than welcome to do it for [info]kashiichan, however. ;D

LiveJournal - Graphic previews [October 28, 2007]
[ mood | annoyed ]

There's a section here. It's a tickbox labelled "Enable graphic previews on external links within your journal". Please untick it! It's incredibly annoying, and since it's a new feature most people don't even know about it.

If you consciously decide to keep it on then that's fine, but don't just leave it there unlooked at. D:

Discomfort rears its ugly head amongst LJ users. [June 03, 2007]
[ mood | sad ]

[info]ravan writes:

I want to go back to posting memes, adventures with my cat, craft project status, and the occasional political rant.

But I can't, yet. I don't feel right about it.

I don't really have a clear understanding of what I can expect from 6A/LJ anymore. I don't have any faith that these people won't attempt to exercise editorial control over my interests and my writings.

I don't write fanfic, or porn. But I do write about unpopular, controversial subjects: paganism, homosexuality, gay marriage, childfreedom, homelessness, civil disobedience, liberal politics, civil rights and gun rights.

Who, or what, is next?? What topic is next under 6A's "we don't want that in our community" banhammer?

There is a chill in LJ-land. I can't feel safe to rant about wanting to string up nameless users at work by their short hairs, now - for fear I'll be accused of some nebulous "crime", and have my journal deleted. I can't rant about what I'd like to see happen to the entire Phelps clan - for fear I'll be accused of solicited criminal activity, and be banned from a service I've *paid for* on someone's whim. But Ann Coulter can get mainstream press coverage for her advocacy of hunting down liberals as "traitors".

Work with me, 6A. Repudiate "zero tolerance" and knee-jerk judgments.

"LiveJournal Strikethrough 2007" Update [June 01, 2007]

SixApart representative Barak Berkowitz ([info]barakb25) has made a post in [info]news regarding the whole "LJ Strikethrough 2007" fiasco. The comment limit has been reached there so please don't attempt to reply, however the links to the original threads have been included for validation purposes. Please note that I have condensed some exerpts chosen into one paragraph to increase readability; all links open in a new window/tab.

"LiveJournal Strikethrough 2007" - Hoist the Colours [May 31, 2007]
[ mood | aggravated ]

General Information

"Warriors For Innocence" is a group of people that has been mentioned a lot on LJ recently, so I apoligise if you're sick of hearing about it. They have a blog, on which they post news articles and other such information, targeting pedophillia and child molestation. WFI claim to be a "group of people who are sick and tired of pedophiles and child molesters hurting children and having a say on the internet without any type of accountability." When asked why they did not have a TOS or FAQ page, they responded with: "This site is a blog. It does not have a TOS. Being a group of people, we answer to the law and to ourselves. We do not break the law and we do not advocate breaking the law."

This in itself is respectable, but they have been making a lot of noise on the internet. By their own admission, they "practically cleaned out Blogger of pedophile web sites. We plan on doing the same with LiveJournal." They therefore contacted LiveJournal and "requested" that the website remove "sites that promote pedophilia, child sex, child abuse, and other illegal activities". Because of this, LiveJournal have been suspending users left, right and centre, and until recently no one really knew why. Now however, many users have banded together on journals and/or communities to let us know that LJ appear to be sending form letters, explaining the reason for the suspension, and it's related to user interests.

The consensus seems to be that in order to survive the "LJ Strikethrough 2007", backing up your journal, making your entries private, and erasing your LJ interests are the way to go.

If you want to get involved, the best way is to grab an icon, make a post, and email LiveJournal. I've done it; band together, and we'll surely get through this.

News

  • After a member of LJ checks WFI's discussion pages, certain people wonder whether [info]fanficrants will be their next target.
  • SixApart CEO Barak Berkowitz ([info]barakb25) has made this post in [info]news regarding this whole fiasco. He has since posted twice more here and here. In light of this, and to save you all from sifting through the massive amount of "AGREED"s, I've started another post with the most insightful and relative comments from his first post. You can read it here.
  • [info]brad, a LiveJournal staff member, lets us know that he is in no way involved in this LJ drama as he is on holiday. Interestingly enough, he didn't find out about this through LJ either.
  • [info]anildash, a LiveJournal staff member, posted a comment regarding this on MetaFilter, despite no posts appearing at [info]news or otherwise. He has since apoligised for his outburst here and here.
  • CNet.com has posted an article regarding the mass deletion/suspension.
  • Perverted Justice comment on the LJ screwup.
  • Several users have reported problems with spyware after visiting the WFI page. For this reason, and because no one wants to boost the page-view count for these people, use a proxy.
  • There are rumours that individuals have been suspended for having questionable icons. This has no basis in fact, although it's probably a good idea to back up your icons anyway.
  • This thread reveals that WFI is logging ISP numbers, leading to many LJ users feeling stalked. Read more here.
Back Up Your LiveJournal Deleted/Suspended Journals/Communities
  • There is another list of suspended/deleted journals/communities here. It seems to be more complete than the other links, listed below, and was gathered from a reputable source.
  • [info]jamoche is collecting responses from LJ Abuse here. Other records of individual responses can be found here and here.
  • [info]slaveofmydreams has posted an incomplete list of deleted/supended fandom-related communities here.
  • [info]lolaraincoat has posted another list here.
  • There is also a rapidly growing list of journals/communities over at starchaserstudios.net.
General Advice Legality Awareness
  • [info]originality has created icons for us to use. More icons (by [info]mscellym) can be found here, here, here, here and here.
  • [info]roaring has edited one of [info]originality's banners so that we get alternatives.
  • Images such as this and this have started floating around the internet.
  • Some LJ users have decided to spread awareness of this through the very medium that this originally started: LJ interests. These include Anti-Warriors of/for Innocence, solidarity_against_internet_witch_hunts (working again) solidagity_aainst_internep_widkfh_hslts, freedom of speech, freedom of expression, getting suspended for your interests and not being deleted/suspended. You can read more about it here, here or here.
  • [info]catrinella has posted information on her LJ as well, including links (already listed) and more deleted/suspended journals/communities.
Contact
  • Many LJ users have emailed WFI directly. There are lots of LiveJournal entries recording this; some can be found here and here.
  • [info]ladybrighid3333 is orchestrating a massive response to LJ here.
  • [info]lunaticsocko has started this petition in order to formally express their disappointment at Livejournal for banning these communities without consideration of the motivations of the people responsible for making complaints against them.
Communities
  • Several communities have been set up to discuss this "LJ Strikethrough", as well as share information, including [info]innocence_jihad, fandom_fighters, [info]sevenfandomdays, [info]whydoesljcensor, and fandomtossed (on GJ).
  • There are many communities set up now that are related to this (but not directly influenced by it). They include:
    * [info]fandom_counts: a community that was set up to gain an accurate count of how many users are involved in fandom. All you need to do is join with your fandom-based journal;
    * [info]wrongfultos: a community that was set up to collect the names of support or survivor communities deleted in the 2007 strikeout;
    * [info]never_permanent: a community dedicated to people who refuse to pay for LJ service ever again, including purchasing a permanent account when they are on sale; and
    * [info]fandom_gives: a community set up to help redirect the money that users are no longer spending on LJ to charities.
Individual Cases
  • [info]onewavebreaks had her LJ permanently deleted for "listing child-molestation, incest and nepiophilia as interests. Oddly, listing those had nothing to do with fandom, but of overcoming being molested as a child." Read the original thread here.
  • [info]ataniell93 has posted an entry about two RP (role-playing) communities that were deleted based on their interests, despite obviously being RP journals.
Opinions

[info]makusu_san writes something that I believe is very important to keep in mind:
First of all they aren't warriors. They are people who've had enough and think they can make a difference by taking the case online and accusing every trace of pedophilia and child pornography that they can find.

What does it mean to be a warrior? A warrior has virtue, honor, patience, integrity, impeccability, self control, selflessness. A warrior does good for all before his or herself. Although they think they are doing a greater good they have targeted the wrong people. A warrior does not go out looking for an enemy or someone to harm or accuse. A warrior is someone who protects. They should be focusing more of their attention to their communities so more children and adults aren't raped. It does happen. These "warriors" have no patience. They are eager to accuse...

Testimonials [November 12, 2006]
[ mood | cheerful ]

So! Prompted more by something amusing in response to something I said over MSN than any real desire to be praised, I'm asking for testimonials! What do you think of me, people? I have no problem with anything explicit, but keep in mind that these are going to be going on my userinfo, where children and people who know you in real life can come across them and see what a dick you are. :D

And... go! *waits*

Today I realised that I'm sick of clutter.

Today I cut a whole lot of people from my MSN list. They never talk to me, and I never talk to them. Keeping them around "just in case" has gotten me nowhere. Snip. Gone.

Today I cut some people from my FL on [info]kashiichan. Snip. Gone. I never read their LJs, and they never read mine (as far as I know). If I've made a mistake, let me know and I can add you again. I don't mind if you still want to read my entries.

That is all, for now.
